Most people see the act of quitting drinking as an event. In reality, it is more of a process.
And let me tell you….it doesn’t happen overnight.
Oh sure, at some point, someone might actually stop drinking alcohol, and thus begins their new life in sobriety. This is all well and good, and it might even seem that this sudden halt to their drinking was an event. But in reality, it took a long process of surrender in order for them to get to the point where they were ready to stop drinking for good.
Furthermore, after a person has stopped, they are really just beginning on a new life in recovery. They have a ton of learning to do and their life is just starting over, really. It is quite a process that will consume their entire life for the next several months or even years. Quitting drinking is sort of a big deal to an alcoholic.

If the alcoholic does not take action then they have little hope for success. You cannot get sober by just sitting around and wishing that things were different. One of these is that you get a safe environment in which to detoxify yourself. Another advantage is that it is much safer due to the medical staff there. And finally, you will also get a lot of extra support from the peers there who are trying to stop drinking, just like you are.
